Lampworking is the art of handcrafting unique objects from glass rods which are melted over an open flame. Moretti/Effetre is a soft glass and is commonly used by lampwork beaders. Borosilicate glass, is also used for lampworking and is a hard glass, also known as Pyrex. Moretti glass is the beadmaker's choice. A soda-lime glass from Italy. Lampworked beads are made by winding molten glass rods around a steel or
copper mandrel. The bead is then shaped by slowly rotating the glass over an open flame to create different shapes. Differences in size, shape and colors are to be expected with lampworked beads whereas each one is individually created. Correctly made lampworked beads need to be kiln annealed at a certain temperature for a length of time in order to insure that the beads do not crack or break under normal usage. |
